Three minutes and fifty-five seconds: A guiding principle of soca seems to be that anything can be turned into a reason to dance. So while most soca tracks are about wining, rum, carnival and sex you also get tracks about arthritis, pig farming… and Osama Bin Laden. Mighty Pawol’s “Osama Say” was recorded in early 2002, in time for that year’s carnival season, and is probably the most extraordinary musical response to 9/11 I’ve ever heard. (It’s also a pretty typically boshing soca track.)
Reblogging because my mind is completely blown right now. This…just…I have no words.
